There were two teams that I was following.
One was an Irish team in an incredibly well prep'd E46 M3. They finished 38th out of 57 cars after some serious problems, one of which was changing and blown engine and having the car back on track after 2.5hrs. Some details on octane.ie
Second team was a car that finished 13th out of 57. This car was a........................ MKIII Golf ABF 5dr. Thats not 13th in class, that's 13th overall. The car beat machinery worth 40 times it's value.
I've copied the spec and added it below. It's amazingly basic in comparison to it's competitors. Standard callipers, standard 020 gearbox (no LSD), approx 190-200bhp AND 13th.

The spec is essentially very basic, and very OEM based: Suspension hardware was all refurbished/new parts along with the brakes (Standard VR6 288mm with Ferodo DS3000+/Pagis blue pads and std rears) and mounting bolts etc, SuperPro bushes throughout. All mated to Ian's custom spec GAZ Gold coilovers. All meticulously prepared.
The engine, which was a freshly build ABF. Standard rods and crank with Wossner forged pistons. A 'Man in the shed' head with mild piper cams. Full custom BTB exhaust and specially made 'Retro Gti' 4 branch manifold. Induction was taken care of via some 45mm DTH Throttle bodies. And all controlled via a Omex 600 ecu, and various Ford Edis parts for ignition. - All of which developed a usable 210bhp on Stealths rolling road (190-200bhp in the real world!).. We only revved it to 6,500 for most of the race, as the power band was lovely and broad, especially though the shorter 020 box.. I must admit I did use the full 7,500 a few time to destroy some Civic type R's etc, it really did fly!
The guys in the Leon Mk1 Supercopa we were sharing a pit garage with were reviewing some 'in car' vids of their day qually, and remarked on how our 'nail' romped down the straight with a bit of intent!
This was mated to a COMPLETELY standard Mk2 16v 020 2Y box rebuild by Dave Carvell. No special parts, not even a diff or shim kit..
