Hello good people,
I want to do a progress tread on here to keep track of what I’m doing and to get ideas, help, comments and criticisms.
Well, background; I acquired a red mk1 scirocco in Cork (off mars83 on this site), these are my favourite VW and I had been after one for ages. Now I have a MK1 Mk2 scirocco and a corrado. Trending much..
Anyway, I got her home months ago at this stage, end of July I think, didn’t do much with her because of Work/College. I did start it and drive it about, ran well but its LHD and very counterintuitive. So I Parked her and stripped a lot outta it to see the rust…. Oh lord the rust. Im hoping the pictures will show up. Dad made a rotisserie for it which is very handy. Also this is my first attempt at welding and car resto. Which is obvious, as Im writing this my face is un-mercifully sunburned. (wear a mask)
The plan right now is to get the body soild. Get all the rust outta there. Also this is done on strict budget. So much so that the steel that’s going into her is off an old diesel tank and other scraps, hey I’m a student. Dad is working on a mk1 escort 8ft away so help is always handy
The first pics are off the ad the way I bought her

Safe at home:

Rolling around: (in july)

An idea of some of the rust..

Joe scraping off some shite:

Some repairing:

(IMG:http://i1115.photobucket.com/albums/k547/Qbritgohm/pc210166.jpg)

(IMG:http://i1115.photobucket.com/albums/k547/Qbritgohm/pc200165.jpg)

As you can see, I have some work ahead of me. Plan right now is to make it solid and RHD, with coraddo dash. Im not going for anything like original. It'll only look like a scirocco when im done
All comments very welcome, if any one has left over scirocco bits I might need, i'd love to hear from you (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Fair play to you, keep the faith. Not many left so worth saving. I used to see this car on the Tallaght bypass on my way to work on a regular basis. 86 Dublin plate.

^ My newest motto (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Didnt get much done over the holidays, but started tipping away at it again, one day I accidently thought about the whole car and how to finish it. I was quite disheartened for the next few days (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wacko.gif) . another thing i've learned is to just do small bits at a time. Read the book page by page as it were.
Thanks everyone for encouragement

@Donie Thanks I had forgotten about it again

Ive more pictures. worth a thousand words and all :

Good job. Looking at pics of mk1 and mk2's the sills do look a bit different alright.
Would you consider getting the worst bits sandblasted before welding?

Always great to see a Mk1 rocco being saved!!
Best of luck with the project!! I think rot is pretty much par for the course with these!!

As regards the shape of the sills, I have a series 1 and can PM you a pic of the sill in her for comparison if you like.

Thanks, Yeah id love to get my hands on a sandblaster, much easier to weld and I'd be able to see what I'm at, nothing worse that welding in a plate and finding a load of rust 4 microns away (IMG:style_emoticons/default/mad.gif)
just dont have the monies (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

http://www.sjebbandsons.com/sandblasting-83-c.asp
thats where i got my sandblasting stuff, not the best in the world but it does the job just fine,
think the brother got a bucket of sand at the beach, had to go through it a few times to get the big bits out, and dry it til its bone dry, works a treat if you get an agitator in there(or just keep kicking the bucket (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif) )

http://sciroccoregisterforum.co.uk/carforu...f=5&t=10130
set of mk1 sills for ya, the mk2 sills are different, but if i remember right the mk1 golf sills sre pretty much the exact same, bar the ends of them.

its coming on great, looking at the pics im amazed it hasnt fallen off the spit.
best of luck and keep it up.
