One of our long term contributors came up with an interesting suggestion. This thread is to discuss the pros and cons as we are considering running the suggestion on a trial basis.

So what is the suggestion?

From time to time, we all make trips from one place to another outside our own county.
At same time, someone else may be contemplating buying some parts but due to work or home constraints just can't find the time to commit to buy and collect. So to help we are considering a new section in the Classfieds area. This section will allow people to post up if they are planning on being on the road on a certain date between 2 location points and who are willing to collect or deliver an item on behalf of another member. Similarly if some is looking for some help to collect or deliver an item they can start a wanted thread on same section.

Obviously this will need some coordination between people but it could be a very helpful dig out.

A sample thread could be as follows:
"All, I'm driving from Dublin to Galway next Wednesday, leaving at 9am and returning at 6pm. If anyone woukd like something collected on this route let me know or if you want something delivered please nake sure you pass it to me on Tuesday before 9pm"
or
"I'm based in Dublin and was wondering if anyway is coming from Galway to Dublin this week and willing to collect some parts for me?"

Get the picture?

Please post your views on this and we'll then decide based on this feedback whether to trial it or not. This is already done sporadically but may be useful to add it to one central place to make it easier for people to see.

Thanks by the way to Kevin aka blzeedub for the suggestion.

...you worded that a lot better than I explained it in the PM to you Mike, fair play.
...its not a 'new idea' - I saw it on another site, but though it might be a useful addition on here, as theres quite a few members on this site now, from all parts of the country, far and wide; how many times have you spotted a part/set of wheels you needed/liked, but at the opposite end of the country... my opinion is, is that it can work, but its up to each member who would use it, to make it work....

How does it work in practical terms on the site you spotted it on Kevin?
What works well and what doesn't?

My only concern woukd be the situation that for whatever reason, delayed or otherwise, someone can't collect the parts so you have a seller still holding the parts and a buyer with maybe money passed on but without their purchase.

hers the site/link to the section, I 'lifted' the idea from;
http://retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=rrpe

I think its only about a month old on that site. Theres no rules for the section; retro rides sort of 'add' rules/guidelines 'after-the-fact' from what I have seen...

I suppose its the age old conflict of X doing the picking up 'being a stickler for time' or genuineley on a time crunch, and Y who is to meet X with the bits being of the 'when I am there to meet him, Im there to meet him' blaze attitude re;time, being the stumbling block...

Theres also issues with 'inspecting parts' before purchase; if someone cant get down to collect, and relies on another to pick up, then he cant 'inspect' the bits 'first hand' -to most folk this is obvious....

Good idea, personally i would be apprehensive about doing it for a member i knew little about but otherwise think its a good idea.

There are 'issues' with it; but it might be useful... it would be a section provided by the site for the benefit of the members, and if members treat it as a useful 'resource', dont engage in flaming, waffling long treads, naming and shaming etc etc, then mods dont have to 'police it'....
eg A tread 'Cork to Dublin, Apr 2/10 -depart 2pm arrive 6pm. etc and someone who wants something brought up, just replies to the tread, 'yeah, I need 2 shafts bringing up, buying from X... I'll pm X now, and see if hes available to meet up with you to give you the shafts (and will arrange to send on payment); I'll pm you and let you know for sure' etc.

Simply the 'business' of collecting and delivering to be deal with on the section/tread...

..it may or may not work.

I'd be pretty much of the same opinion. Also if I were personally involved the items wouldn't be needing inspecting as one persons opinion could be a lot different to another's.

I'd do it only if I personally know both parties involved, and they know each other. There is far too much shit that can hit the fan otherwise.

Very good idea though.

i would be abit apprehensive myself unless it was members i knew. i dont think there is any need for this as its only goin to cause a hole load of sh** when money, parts or what ever it maybe goes missing let the seller an buyer sort this out between them
well thats my out look on it waste of time

i say if it could be kept with established members on site it would be a good idea
but id say it would be better if money wasnt involved cos last thing you would want is to pick up a part pay for it and then not get payed on delivery of part

Good feedback keep it coming.

So far:

Guidelines

1. Seller and buyer handle the payments between then directly
2. Person collecting or delivering will collect/deliver without any inspection.
3. Respect for the person collectng/delivering in terms of keeping to times agreed

also suggest that when task is done that some feedback is posted.

Excellent idea i have had lads pick up parts for me before and it worked out fine. Im prob 1 the lads ray had helped without meeting him and fair play to him he collected the part from the north and left it with another member who lived very near to me, wasn't asked just offered to help. Saved me a nice trip! Would be great to see this take off.

how about setting up something like running costs like 0.15 - 25 cent/km or something like that?
so if you travel 50km you earn between E7.5 and 12.5 for the trip etc?

of course, having someone giving the correct km distance wise would be easily manipulated to get more money from people, but i think if a common approach was used such as www.mappy.com or the aa roadtrip thingy to "guestimate" the distance could assist in verfiying the correct mileage/Km etc

Yeah isn't there a whole insurance "issue" about carrying goods or passengers for money on a standard car policy?
