Probably of no use to you but i hired a passat in cyprus last christmas , it locked up the handbrake when i stopped and would not release it. I disconnected the battery for 20 mins and it was fine after that but didnt have it scanned to see if the fault codes were cleared for obvious reasons

Disconnect it and hold the terminals together for about 30 seconds.
After that I'd be all out of ideas I know nothing about the new shape Passats (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) -------------------- |

Left the battery disconnected for 30 minutes. Reconnected and the light were still on the dash flashing.
After about 30 seconds they went off but then got another couple of lights. Parking brake was now functioning but the ESP was showing as off and could not switch it back on. Scanned it again. COuld the rear pads be worn to far and the brakes not getting enough bind as far as the ECU is concerned Trevor ?
Theres a process to reset the park brake settings after inserting new pads - might be worth running to reset pad position ? That right to drive module is going to be a right pain in the arse. -------------------- |

OK all fine.
So the solution for those of you with Passat handbrake problems is to disconnect the battery for 20-30 minutes (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) Thanks for the suggestions/help. -------------------- ![]() ![]() |

Buy a 3BG Trevor (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) Good that it's all sorted Hi Trevor, Sorry to burst your bubble but you have not seen the last of your problems. This is a common problem. Only fix is a software update and new Park brake switch. You will possibly get it under warranty. If not it is one hour labour. Call Ken in Blackwater motors. He will look after you and if it can be done under warranty he will do it. I have seen 5 passats with this issue this year. Very easy to get the light off and codes cleared but they return always without the updated firmware. Best regards JK |

Thanks JK.
Yeah I realise that I only sorted the issue not the problem. Ardfallen did mention a new switch may be needed so I'll follow up with VW and see can I get it and the firmware update done under "goodwill". First time it happened in 2 1/2 years. Actually car has been troublefree up to now. -------------------- ![]() ![]() |

Make sure that they do not charge you over the hour as the last few I have sent in to Blackwater thats what it has taken but as I said they have covered a few under warranty. Best regards JK |

Well we had this problem again yesterday.
I made enquiries locally and was quoted €600 to fix by a main VW service agent (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) Gave Ken @Blackwater a ring. About 95 euro he said which includes a new switch and firmware upgrade. Thanks JK. -------------------- ![]() ![]() |
