Ok so I'm not sure what gearbox is in my car. I know it is one of the mk4 5 speed boxes do they all take the same oil. Blackwater motors said there is one type for the 6 speed and two types for the 5 speed. I got one of the 5 speed ones from them 'G 070 26A2'. Can anyone confirm that this is the right one or shine some light on the different oils used in the mk4's. Oh its a mk2 engine conversion which I didn't do myself.

Which ever you get, make sure its fully synthetic. Well worth the extra, makes a big difference to a cold box. There is a box code stamped in the casing if you want to run that by vw

Thats debatable. I used Redline MTL which is fully synthetic and the gear change was terrible even in warm weather. However when I drained the box and used the VW spec G51 gearoil it totally transformed the gear change. Gear oil can be strange stuff so always best to go to the dealers and get the proper stuff. G51 lasts the life of the box

Ha, now that's debatable!

Fair point though, your experience.I put mtl into my crunchy mk2 8v box...made no difference.always just figured someone had already put some in.
So is that G51 recommend for 20vt boxes too? How much is it?

Theres a 02m 6 speed petrol version which is used with the 180 brake 20v T's . G51 gearoil would do that box. For the 5 speeds Id say its the same but I cant be certain. VW will give you the right stuff over the counter.

60 quid for 3 litres from the stealers Dave
